Mahashivratri
महाशिवरात्रि
The great night of Lord Shiva — most powerful night for Shiva worship
📖 The Story
Mahashivratri literally means "the great night of Shiva." On this night, Lord Shiva performed the Tandava — the cosmic dance of creation, preservation and destruction. It is also believed to be the night when Shiva and Parvati were married. Astronomically, the planetary positions on this night are believed to cause a natural upsurge of energy in the human body, making meditation and spiritual practices especially powerful. Devotees who stay awake the entire night in worship are said to receive Shiva's direct blessings.
🪔 Puja Vidhi
Fast throughout the day. In the evening, bathe the Shiva linga with water, milk, honey, curd, ghee and sugar (Panchamrit). Offer Bael (bilwa) leaves — these are Shiva's most beloved offering. Light a lamp and incense. Chant Om Namah Shivaya 108 times. Stay awake through the four praharas of the night, performing puja at each quarter.
