Sharad Navratri
शारदीय नवरात्रि
The most celebrated Navratri — nine nights of Durga worship
📖 The Story
Sharad Navratri is the most widely celebrated Navratri, occurring in autumn (Sharad ritu). It culminates in Dussehra — the day Rama killed Ravana and Durga killed Mahishasura. This Navratri is celebrated with enormous enthusiasm across India: Garba and Dandiya in Gujarat, Ramlila performances in North India, and Durga Puja in Bengal (the grandest festival of eastern India). The nine forms of Durga worshipped are: Shailaputri, Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda, Skandamata, Katyayani, Kaalratri, Mahagauri, and Siddhidatri.
🪔 Puja Vidhi
Sow barley seeds in a pot (Navratri jwar) at the start. Fast for nine days on fruits and saatvik food. Worship each form of Durga with specific offerings. On Ashtami, perform Havan and Kanya Puja. On Navami, take blessings of nine girls. On Dashami (Dussehra), burn effigies of Ravana.
